Description

A Unique Stainless Steel and Wood Table

Our Stroma stainless steel framed table is a very important part of our collection.  It’s a design which is close to our hearts, and it’s one which encapsulates our philosophies.

This stainless steel and wood table is all about precision and understanding the properties of inherent in these materials.

The under-frame is made from stainless steel bar.  This stainless steel is thin.  When working with it in its pure state one could be forgiven for thinking that it simply wouldn’t be rigid enough to adequately support a large dining table.  However, the design is such that there is much overlaying of one element over another.  And due to the nature of this interlocking, layered framework, this otherwise not structural stainless steel element becomes extremely rigid and robust.  This multi layering feature is not only aesthetically beautiful, but also provides inherent cross-bracing to the overall form.  Consequently this eliminates the need for heavy, bulky members.  It also results in a much more interesting and elegant framework.

The Stroma table also has a solid hardwood timber top.  This provides an overall softening element to the piece and contrasts beautifully with the minimalistic under frame.  The earthy tone provided by the wood beautifully complements the brushed stainless steel and provides a very refined look.  The layering design element embedded in this table also helps to bring the two different materials together in an effective and complimentary manner.  This is not easy to do!  The top often appears to be unattached to the under frame.  This provides significant intrigue and keeps the eye tracking all over the table – all the time.  What more could you ask of a design?

(Please note – the timber top is very securely attached, we assure you!)

The Name: Stroma

As is our custom here are PodMarket® the naming of this steel frame table also has a hidden in-built meaning.  Stroma is the Greek word for stratum, which refers to ‘a layer or a series of layers into which something is separated’.  We feel that this is a great name for such a multi-layered, cross-bracing design.  A stainless steel and wood table + cross bracing layering elements + ‘floating’ top??  Yes, we think this meets the ‘stratum’ definition.

Sustainability

Sustainability is our essence, not just a tag line.
Good Design is sustainable. Minimal materials, cleverly put together, avoiding unnecessary production and waste. Well crafted designs that last a long time, because if you buy cheap you pay twice, and so does the environment.

Sustainability is about health, avoiding bad chemicals, using non-toxic materials.  Choice of materials is important. We prefer natural fibres in our fabrics. Wools, cottons, linens, and leather.  Timber is a great choice for sustainable outcomes. Forests are good for our environment, and timber production has many eco-benefits. We prefer timbers that are properly harvested using sustainable forestry practices, and timbers that last. We use glass, or metal when that’s what the item needs to be beautiful, or functional, or to last a long time. That’s part of a sustainable outcome too.
