With this very modern design we’ve managed to combine, aesthetics, engineering, geometry, proportions, symmetry and functionality to create a truly enigmatic series.  The more you look, the more it draws you in.

In the past

This special glass top side table takes the basic criss-cross legged form and turns it on its head.  In the past, such tables often had very clumsy, angled wooden joints with the bulk of the material having to be removed right in the middle of the leg to enable complicated jointing.  This severely compromised the wood’s strength.  Hence very thick wooden sections were required, which made the whole design clunky and heavy.

Alternatively such under frames were constructed using steel tubing.  These ‘over the top’ steel legs would simply converge at a centre point and were cut and welded into place.  There’s nothing elegant or clever about this.  And the resulting legs are much too heavy aesthetically speaking.

Our modern side table design

Our minimalist side tables however, utilise five legs.  This is relatively unusual.  Pende is in fact the Greek word for the number “five”.  Uniquely it has each of the straight legs passing around the centre of the spiral without actually needing any direct jointing from one leg to another.  Our internationally registered polygon bracket is the only simple form of fixing the legs require.  It’s the precise nature of the angles that lets each leg physically rest on the leg to its immediate right, whilst having the leg on its left rest directly upon it.  This makes the entire under frame network, self-tightening and self-supporting as well as incredibly strong.  And all of this is achieved without the use of any glue.

Each version of the Pende side table is available in either a square or round top.  Furthermore, the glass top is available in either a fully transparent or smoked glass.  Patterned glass – using our own design – is now also an option.  Please contact us directly if you would like to explore the options with this type of decorative etching.

A lamp table too?

But wait, there’s more!

In an attempt to make these side tables even more functional, we designed them to be able to accomodate a light globe.  Thus you get two side tables in one – with the second being a lamp table.  We utilised the interlocking structure to be able to securely hold a globe is place just underneath the glass top.

This methodology has also now been added to our Pende coffee tables.  Different scale.  Same multifunctional concept.

Please follow this link to the Lamp Table section for more information about this great adaptation.

This is precision engineering and seriously thoughtful design.  It’s hard to describe in words, but look closely and you’ll be amazed at what you discover.  Please check out out assembly video here.

Sustainability

Sustainability is our essence, not just a tag line.
Good Design is sustainable. Minimal materials, cleverly put together, avoiding unnecessary production and waste. Well crafted designs that last a long time, because if you buy cheap you pay twice, and so does the environment.

Sustainability is about health, avoiding bad chemicals, using non-toxic materials.  Choice of materials is important. We prefer natural fibres in our fabrics. Wools, cottons, linens, and leather.  Timber is a great choice for sustainable outcomes. Forests are good for our environment, and timber production has many eco-benefits. We prefer timbers that are properly harvested using sustainable forestry practices, and timbers that last. We use glass, or metal when that’s what the item needs to be beautiful, or functional, or to last a long time. That’s part of a sustainable outcome too.
