With this contemporary design we’ve managed to combine, aesthetics, engineering, geometry, proportions, symmetry and functionality to create a truly enigmatic series.  The more you look, the more it draws you in.

In the past

This special glass top dining table takes the basic criss-cross legged form and turns it on its head.  In the past, such tables often had very clumsy, angled wooden joints with the bulk of the material having to be removed right in the middle of the leg to enable jointing.  This severely compromised the wood’s strength.  Hence very thick wooden sections were required, which made the whole design clunky and heavy.  Alternatively such under frames were constructed from hollow steel tubing.  these heavy duty steel legs and simply converge at the centre and are cut and welded into place.  There’s nothing elegant or clever about such designs.  And the resulting legs are much too heavy visually speaking.

Our design

The Pende glass top dining table however, uses (unusually) five legs.  Pende is in fact the Greek word for the number “five”.  Uniquely it has each of the straight legs passing around the centre of the spiral without actually needing any direct jointing from one leg to another.  Our patent pending designed polygon bracket is the only simple form of fixing the legs require.  It’s the precise nature of the angles that lets each leg physically rest on the leg to its right, whilst having the leg on its left rest directly upon it.  This makes the entire under frame network  self-tightening and self-supporting as well as incredibly strong.  And all of this is achieved without the use of any adhesive.

Further Options

Each version of the Pende glass top dining tables is available in either a square or round top.  The glass is available in either clear (fully transparent) or a darker (smoked) glass.  Patterned glass – using our own design – is now also an option.  We use the latest laser cutting technology to produce our etched glass patterns.  In addition to this patterned effect, we have also devised another alternative for those who like to use their tables as working surfaces.  We can now provide you with a customised leather top which sits (dry) on top of the glass.  This leather top can also have a central hole (viewing window) embedded within, to allow you to still view the interlaced leg network from above.  Leather tops allow the user to work on the table without fear of damaging the glass.  By not gluing the leather top, you can also easily remove it when you want to show off the entire table structure.  Please contact us directly if you would like to explore the options with this type of decorative etching or leather top.

Furthermore, with the help of our specialist leather-working family here in Melbourne, we have developed some specialist leather buttons.  These decorative buttons are made entirely from kangaroo leather.  A little touch of Australia for this iconic design.  Kangaroo leather is very under-utilised due to the size of the hides available and its toughness.  For those in the know however, kangaroo leather is incredibly strong and great to work with.  It is also very suited to the moulding and forming process.  Its inherent structure allows the heat formed shape to set firm and result in a very rigid and stable form.

We now offer these decorative kangaroo buttons as standard on all our Pende tables.  They effectively work as covers for the bolt heads which are used to connect the wooden legs to the central steel polygon bracket.

This is precision engineering and seriously thoughtful design.  It’s hard to describe in words, but look closely and you’ll be amazed at what you discover.  Please check out out assembly video here.

Sustainability

Sustainability is our essence, not just a tag line.
Good Design is sustainable. Minimal materials, cleverly put together, avoiding unnecessary production and waste. Well crafted designs that last a long time, because if you buy cheap you pay twice, and so does the environment.

Sustainability is about health, avoiding bad chemicals, using non-toxic materials.  Choice of materials is important. We prefer natural fibres in our fabrics. Wools, cottons, linens, and leather.  Timber is a great choice for sustainable outcomes. Forests are good for our environment, and timber production has many eco-benefits. We prefer timbers that are properly harvested using sustainable forestry practices, and timbers that last. We use glass, or metal when that’s what the item needs to be beautiful, or functional, or to last a long time. That’s part of a sustainable outcome too.
