Modern meets tradition

The Kobei Drawers are contemporary.  Bedside drawers never looked so good.  But as contemporary as they are, the entire Kobei drawer series utilises a very old, rarely used, European cabinet making technique.   Each drawer operates without mechanical runners.  Instead they open and close based on a very effective and efficient ‘old school’ concept.  They move using an integrated central running system which provides lateral (left + right) guidance.  This clever methodology allows the drawer to be 100% visible throughout its full range of motion.

Why hide things?

The unique way of opening + closing the drawers, allows the entire piece to be on display all the time.  There’s no need to do the normal thing – which is to hide the drawers within an all enclosing carcase.  These modern bedside drawers operate so beautifully that we decided to have every working part on full display.  Just like inner workings of a high end, mechanical Swiss watch.

Hence, the open framework effectively becomes the visual highlight itself.  The drawers actually become the secondary feature, which is most unusual for modern bedside drawers.  This provides intrigue and lightness to the overall form.  And it also allows the piece to function just as effectively as a side table, or storage unit.

Choices, choices…

Fist choice.  Here, we make the drawers using the highest quality method possible – full dovetails.  Modern bedside drawers with the premier drawer construction technique.  We do also offer a version with less complex drawer construction methods, click here.  This provides a very different feel to the overall piece.  It’s simply a matter of choice.  Some people like to see the dovetails on the corners of each drawer, whilst others prefer the more minimalist look. There is no right answer.  It’s all about what you want from your bedside drawers.

Second choice.  We now also offer the Kobei with an option of being available with one or two drawers.  Often, this will be determined based on what you purchase the piece for.  Will it act purely as a modern bedside unit?  If so, it makes sense to have both drawers available to increase your storage options.  However, if you’d rather use the Kobei as a special side table in the lounge area, you might prefer to make it visually ‘lighter’ and only go for the single drawer option.  For office storage, once again, a pair of drawers makes perfect sense.

Third choice.  We now offer a range of timbers too.  Do you want a contrasting frame colour to that of the drawers, or do you want them all to be the same?  Do you want browns or blacks?  It’s all about getting the result you desire.
